Being A Specification Writer

For our upcoming April program and Pecha Kucha presentations I have been putting together one about my life as a specifier.  My education, professional background and passion have been about architecture and being an architect.  I love to draw/sketch (the old-fashion way – by hand, not computer).  I love to solve design and construction problems. I love to work out details.  I love the coordination of all disciplines to create a whole building.  And I love to work with the variety of clients I have had over the years.

So how did I come to be an architectural specifications writer?  One answer – the position opened up in an office I was working in about 20 years ago and I took it.  Another answer – writing specifications has become an extension of all the roles and responsibilities I have had as an architect.  Like I said, I love detailing and getting into the parts and pieces of a building.  Writing specifications has helped me to better know these parts and pieces, how they are made, and how they can be best used.  When writing specs I also have a chance to coordinate building elements, offer recommendations in detailing, and do quality review of the drawings.  Now I also meet with more product and manufacturer’s representatives who help me know more and how to better use their products.  In the big picture, writing specifications has made me a more rounded and better architect.  I am proud to be an architect and a specifications writer.
