Great Lakes Region Conference

Leadership from the 13 Great Lakes regional CSI Chapters converged in Detroit’s Greektown for the
2019 Great Lakes Regional Conference in April. The Grand Rapids Chapter was well represented in both
attendance as well as presenting at the conference.
Beyond an opportunity to learn more about the various expectations of Executive Board positions
(President, President Elect, Treasurer, Secretary) there were opportunities for learning about several key
director positions including Programs and Membership. In parallel to the CSI Leadership Training was a
CEU Extravaganza to ensure there was something for everyone. There were several keynote speakers
during the conference. The first was from Aaron Foley, Author and Detroit’s Chief Storyteller at Detroit
Media and Planning. Aaron spoke about history, culture and grass-roots changes taking place in Detroit.
His focus was on the people that never left Detroit and unique characteristics of several of the
neighborhoods. The second keynote presentation came from Rod Liggons of Detroit’s Land Bank
Authority. Mr. Liggons explained how the work he does is helping clean up neighborhoods in Detroit
while providing people a chance to own their own home.
The conference wrapped up with awards on Saturday morning followed by a scavenger hunt in Detroit’s
Eastern Market. Dressed in khaki’s and red polo shirts, the Grand Rapids crew was ready to pick up a
shift stocking shelves and greeting guests at Target… but decided to call it a weekend and head back
home.
